Old House Handbook reduced in price!

October 29, 2010

Now only £17+pp!!

Just a short message to tell you that the Old House Handbook, a must read for anyone buying, owning or just interested in older houses, is now reduced in price from £25 to £17 +pp on the SPAB website. www.spab.org.uk/on-line-shop/

This book has been written by two people passionate above the care and repair of older buildings. It’s full of good quality colour photographs and very useful tips and advice covering every aspect of a building.

I have found the book very useful when undertaking repair work on my own home because the advice is very practical and not overly complicated. My particular expertise is carpentry and joinery however, this book is not designed for the tradesman but the homeowner.

If you read this book you will quickly get to grips with all the essential issues required to correctly look after your property.

The guidance will also help you understand the correct methods of repair BEFORE you approach a tradesman to undertake the work. Having an understanding of the correct repair techniques should ensure you don’t get caught out by remedial damp salesmen or replace a component when a simple repair would suffice.

Chapters include:

1.  Look before you leap

2.  Getting the work done

3.  Breathability and damp

4.  Walls

5.  Structural movement

6.  Roofs

7.  Timber and carpentry

8.  Solid floors

9.  Chimneys, flues and fireplaces

10.  Windows, doors and joinery

11.  Plasters, renders and roughcast

12.  Paints and finishes

13.  Building Services

14.  Living for today and tomorrow
