Plastering over the cracks!!

March 10, 2012

Plaster fallen off re-skimmed bedroom ceiling

My last post (see below) identified the need to be cautious when buying newly refurbished houses and flats. One of the common short-cuts dodgy builders practice is to plaster over old and defective lath and plaster.

Why do they do this?

Well, removing all the lath and plaster in a house is very labour intensive and will require a skip or three. So a cheap alternative is simply to plaster over the old walls and ceilings. Job done!

For a short time (long enough to flog the property) the re-plastered surface looks great…until the cracks re-appear or the plaster falls off!

I was surveying a house this week and what did I see but a section of plaster missing from the bedroom ceiling.

In fact many walls and ceilings in the house had defective wall and ceiling plaster which is a shame because it was in quite good decorative condition.

…now what was the name of that skip company?
