Are you paying too much for water?

March 18, 2012

Last week I was carrying out a survey on a first floor converted flat in North London.

Coming to the end of my inspection and under element G3 Water, I checked whether a water meter had been installed to the incoming main for the first floor flat.

Yes, there was a water meter and yes the meter was measuring water consumption coming into the first floor flat.

However, I also found out that the same water meter was measuring water consumption for the ground floor flat as well. The problem was that both properties were being billed the same amount for the same water consumption!!

The water company was in fact billing both flats separately but charging each based on the single water meter! The water company was in effect double charging.

Anyway, having done a quick calculation at the property based on their monthly direct debits, they had over paid on their water bills jointly by around £950 over a period of 4 years.

To benchmark your water consumption against mine; with two adults and 2 young children, we use precisely 2.2m3 per week (114.4m3 per year). This average has been established from faithfully recording my water meter every week for the last 6 years. We pay £27/month for water which covers our usage quite nicely. This is £2.83/m3.

Go and check out to see approximately how many cubic metres of water you use a year and then multiply your annual consumption by £2.83/m3 to find out how much you should be paying.

  1. Hello admin. I came to your “Are you paying too much for water? Surveyor's Notebook” page via Google but it was difficult to find as you were not on the first page of search results. I see you could have more visitors because there are not many comments on your website yet. I have found a website which offers to dramatically increase your rankings and traffic to your site: They managed to get close to 1000 visitors/day using their services, you could also get lot more targeted visitors from search engines than you have now. I used their services and got significantly more visitors to my site. Hope this helps 🙂 Take care. Tina

Thanks for you comments. I’m not too fussed how many people I get onto my blog. Writing the blog is a kind of therapy. If I can help one person, I’ll be happy.

      Regards SNB
